The Destination: Larnaca, Cyprus
The advantage of Larnaka, the third largest town of Cyprus, is that it is large enough to provide everything one needs but is not too large to become overcrowded. There are beautiful beaches, several archaeological sites and six museums all within the centre of the city. Thus Larnaka constitutes an interesting district for visitors but also, due to its location, provides an excellent base from which to get to know the central and eastern section of Cyprus.

Archaeological Sites and Cultural Monuments

As with all cities in Cyprus there is an abundance to see in Larnaka, especially as it is built over Kition, the ancient Kingdom of Cyprus. Excavations can be seen in certain parts in the city which are worth a look as they contain shrines and artifacts used during those times. Additionally, the magnificent church of Agios Lazaros merits a visit as this is the site where the relics of this saint are kept. Other places of interest are the Hala Sultan Tekke on the shores of the famous salt lake and the Kamares Aqueduct built under Ottoman rule in the 18th century.

Beaches

Larnaka boasts 25km of beautiful beaches throughout the district. The beaches vary from pebbly to sandy with the main ones being the Larnaka Bay, the Makenzey Beach, Perivolia and Zygi Bay.

Entertainment

A wide variety of restaurants, cafes, bars and nightclubs are available throughout the city to suit every need. Furthermore, summer sports, sea activities and boat cruises are available from most beaches. The evenings are never dull in this city as apart from the restaurants, bars and clubs, cultural events are continuously being organized.

Places of Interest

The most signature place of Larnaka is the Foinikoudes (Palm trees) Road adjacent to the Larnaka marina. This is a road parallel to the beach front lined with palm trees, flowers, cafes and restaurants. Walk along the Foinikoudes, being enwrapped in the atmosphere until you reach the end where the imposing Venetian Larnaka Fort was built. Furthermore a trip to the Larnaka Salt Lake is always enchanting as it has two contrasting characters. In winter, it is home to different colorful migratory birds such as Flamingoes and ducks, but in summer it is a completely different picture, drying up and leaving a thick layer of salt hard enough to walk on.

Villages around Larnaka

However many villages one has visited it is always worth visiting more, as each one has a specific character and soul. One of the most famous is Lefkara known for its narrow meandering streets, rich traditional architecture and most importantly, its renowned laces created by the women of the village. This region is also home to Choirokoitia and Tenta, two of the oldest Neolithic settlements of Cyprus dating as far back as 7 BC. Furthermore, there are several fishing villages, the most renowned being Zygi where well-known fishing taverns line the sea front.
