Beaches

Beaches in Mykonos are characterized by their golden sand, crystalline waters and good facilities. The most famed beaches are found on the southern side of the island and include Paradise beach, Platis Yialos and Psarou. These get very overcrowded in the peak season though, so if you are looking for a less organized and crowded beach, head for the Northern side of the island. Unfortunately, no buses go there so you will need to rent a motorbike or car to discover them.

Entertainment

One of the main reasons tourists come to the island is to experience the buzz of the Mykonos night life. Trendy bars and clubs line the streets, leading to a large range of choices. Famous international DJs, large crowds with all types of sexual tendencies and a wide range of musical preferences all make up the hum of Mykonos. Beach parties are also very popular and should not be missed. Furthermore, during the summer months there is always a wide variety of cultural and artistic events taking place, with artists from around the world flocking to Mykonos to take part.

Local Specialties

Mykonos food specialities include a dish of homemade sausages, which are flavoured with spices and olives, and dried in the open air. Additionally, onion pie made with the tasty local tyrovolia cheese and excellent sea food are also worth tasting. For a traditional desert, a customary Cycladic sweet made of almonds, called Amigdalota is widely found on the island.

Places of Interest

The capital of the island, Hora or Mykonos Town is considered as the most beautiful village in the Cyclades. Here one can see a clear representation of the typical Cycladic architecture consisting of whitewashed cubic houses, flat roofs, blue doors and windows and narrow, winding paved streets. What is astonishing though is that, in between the quaint houses, more than 350 churches can be found on this little island. These are also painted crystal white but they can be distinguished from their blue or red painted domes. One of the most famous churches is the church of Our Lady Paraportiani, a fine example of traditional architecture found in the Kastro quarter at the end of the picturesque harbour. Near this the Folklore Museum can also be found, which contains a rich variety of local artefacts. Delos, the island just a few miles south of Mykonos is considered as one of the most spiritual centres of Ancient Greece, with a strong tie to mythology as it was said to be the birthplace of Apollo. This island is covered with ancient monuments including an ancient harbour, the Heiron of Apollo and the Avenue of the Lions.
