Kefalonia is a distinct island as, apart from being the biggest of the Ionian Islands, it has a unique natural beauty, geology and history. Its proclaimed beauty is due to a combination of its beaches, its picturesque villages, its unique fir forest and above all the friendliness and hospitality of its people. The island became famous when based on its history, Louis de Bernieres wrote the famous Captains Corellis Mandolin, which later became a movie.

Beaches

Fine, golden sand, magnificent crystal clear waters and unspoiled nature are all used to describe the Kefalonian beaches. Visitors can choose to visit some of the more organized beaches on the island, such as Mirtos, Skala and Lourdas, which contain all the wanted facilities. For some adventure though, one can also go and discover their own private secluded bay hidden along the coast.

Entertainment

Water sports, tennis, horse riding, hunting and sailing are only a few of the activities that can be found on the island. Additionally, as Kefalonia has a rich cultural heritage and strong ties with literature and music, there are abundant events and feasts during the summer months. These include the Kephalonian Amateur Theatre performance, the Music Choral Festival and the celebrations of St. Gerassimos taking place in the middle of August. Furthermore, you can witness the local culture every night as there are many taverns where one can relax to the serenades of the local folk music and dancing. Even though Kefalonia is not well known for its night life visitors will not be disappointed by the selection of restaurants, bars and clubs on the island. The capital of the island, Argostoli, has the liveliest nightlife but many bars and clubs can also be found in the other resorts such as Fiskardo and Skala. During the summer months there are also organised beach parties on the more popular beaches.

Local Specialties

A number of Kefalonia products have gained world recognition due to their uniqueness and quality. Best known is the Robola, a wine made from the indigenous Robola grape mostly grown in the Omala Valley. Another product the Kefalonians are proud of is their cheese selection and quality. Local producers are renowned for their traditional production methods and processes which they still use. Finally, the most famous local sweet, which is definitely worth trying, is the Mandola, a sweet made from sugar, almonds and confectioners red dye.

Places of Interest

Kefalonia is an island just waiting to be explored. A must see are the caves of Drogarati, where multi colored stalagmites and stalactites surround the visitors. Nearby are the Melissani caves which contain underground lakes that can be explored by small rowing boats and whose water changes color according to the sunlight. Another natural phenomenon not to be missed is the Katavothres (Pits) where thousands of tons of sea water ceaselessly pour into pits and disappear. It is also worth to drive through the fir forest, which was declared a National Park, as it is home to a unique fir forest species called Abies Kefallia. Furthermore, due to Kefalonias huge natural wealth, it has been dominated by numerous civilizations whose influence can be seen everywhere in the plethora of historical finds. Many of these are stored in the various museums around the island such as the Archeological Museum and St. Andrew Ecclesian Museum. Additionally, Venetian forts also scatter the island, such as St. Georges Fortress and the castle of Assos.

Villages

The words attractive and picturesque best describe the 200 little villages in Kefalonia. The most famous out of all of them though is Fiscardo, which was the only village not destroyed by the huge Greece earthquakes in 1953, thus all its traditional and Venetian buildings are still intact. It is also interesting to visit Metaxata, which has marvellous views and is the village where Lord Byron stayed and wrote Don Juan. Other villages of interest includes: Argostoli (the capital), Assos and Skala.
